8 February is a national cultural holiday in Slovenia, commemorating the death of France Prešeren, a great Slovenian poet. On the day before the holiday the school organizes a celebration. This year our students prepared three performances. France Prešeren was a master sonneteer, therefore, a student delivered his sonnet Vrba, which is dedicated to his home village and the poet’s regrets about leaving it. Prešeren’s language is inaccessible to today’s youth. To make it more accessible I modernized the language of the poem Dohtar (Doctor) for two students to act out as a dialogue. After they had acted out the poem Prešeren and his beloved Julija continued their conversation in a sketch they had prepared. The students wore costumes borrowed from the opera.
